Our Fall 2011 season began with tremendous excitement over our collaboration with the Dutch chorus Het Concertkor on performances of Dvorak’s magnificent Stabat Mater.
Then tragedy struck, just as our friends from the Netherlands were arriving for final rehearsals. A young construction worker, and soon to be first-time father, fell from the roof rafters to his death in the sanctuary of St. Paul the Apostle in New York, closing our concert venue indefinitely with less than two weeks to concert day.
We were suddenly coping with our sadness at the loss faced by this young man’s family, while simultaneously trying to salvage our concert. St. Paul the Apostle helped us locate a second venue in record time. However, within a week a new problem arose at the new venue forcing us to begin searching again.
It is a testament to the indomitable spirit of music and a handful of our members that we were able to rebound once more. Our friends at St. Michael’s Church came to our rescue and allowed us to move the concert to their sanctuary for our performance.
Say It Ain't Snow
Then, on our concert day, a freak October nor’easter struck, making it impossible for some of our singers to travel to Manhattan for the performance.

Less stalwart choruses might have cancelled the performance. More than once we questioned whether this concert was meant to be.
But we soldiered on with the support of loyal friends and determination, while also managing to raise over $1,500 for the family of the poor workman who lost his life in the tragic accident.
Ultimately, the challenges we’d faced seemed to make the already intense power of the Stabat Mater even more affecting. Our efforts were rewarded with an extraordinary concert experience. And despite the weather, we had almost 400 people turnout for the performance.
It's Not Too Late to Buy a Ticket to Support the Troupe
All those last-second changes caused our concert production costs to skyrocket. It would help us out tremendously if you would buy a ticket in absentia. Any donation you make is tax-deductible.
Or you may phone us at 914-674-2865 or email us at tickets@hudsonvalleysingers.org.
We sincerely thank you for your support.
Would you like to sing with us?
We are currently looking for committed singers to join us for Handel's Theodora on April 15 & 21, 2012. Rehearsals have already begun, but there is still plenty of time to get involved.
Formal auditions are not required, but singers are expected
to prepare on their own between rehearsals. We
welcome experienced singers in all voice parts. Voice
part CDs are available.
We
rehearse on Wednesday evenings at 7:30pm in the wonderfully acoustical auditorium at Andrus on Hudson in Hastings (185 Old Broadway; map & directions). All interested singers are welcome in all voice parts. High school and college students,
too.
