The Hudson Valley Singers and Eu Sirotkine present
Nabucco by Giuseppe Verdi
An opera in four acts, one intermission, sung in Italian
This opera conveys a sense of mounting drama, as if infused with biblical fervor—its continuous dynamic advance resonating with faith in liberation. Powerful Nabucco, the princess-commander Abigaille, and the high priest Zaccaria continuously infuse the music with energy and determination.
The choruses dominate the score, and it is through them that the conflict between the two nations—Babylonian and Israelite—prevails over the love triangle. Bending and varying with each circumstance, they convey a positive or negative reaction, such as severity of prayer in the outset, dread when Jerusalem falls, and rage and fanaticism when angry crowds curse Ismaele.
The best known and loved of all the choruses is "Va, pensiero, sull'ali dorate", so much so it became the unofficial anthem of the Italian independence movement and was chanted decades later at Verdi's funeral by thousands. It has become an encore staple in opera houses throughout the world.
